For my final blog in this series of class blogs, I’m am going to have one hell of bitch session.
In the holidays while the computer system was being updated, or cleaned up or whatever was going on they managed to make life very difficult for some students. A few lost access to there files, a few lost access to application and myself, I lost my entire home drive. So it really didn’t matter that I had backed up my files, no, even they wouldn’t work as all the little information that no one ever thinks to save e.g. fonts and random cookies were wiped also. So I had nothing to work with, nothing at all and I couldn’t save anything onto it nor could I use my Wintec email. I was o for awesome! So naturally I went to the student help desk, but as per usual there was nothing they could do…maybe the IT guys should be down here, that might help right?! So they tried and tried and nothing, all was lost.
Not only that we have the issue of the Macs being on the PC network, it just doesn’t work, its too slow and not designed for what Macs do. Not being a computer techie, I can’t offer any advice on how to fix all of these problems, but this was the final straw for me and it really needs to be dealt with ASAP.
I was an unfortunate student to lose my homedrive. However, mine was recovered. How does the same error occur in our homedrives yet mine is recovered?

ReplyDeleteThe network at Tec is as bad as the help you receive from the help desk when something goes wrong. I am sick and tired of going to ask questions that are all answered “I don’t know so frustrating. It has gotten to the point where I have stopped asking for help period. I think that the only way things will change is to continue to complain about how bad the network is and use your experience as an example to do so. Also in this situation it’s not like they can refund you the time and effort it took to do the work and extensions are good but you still have to redo all the work you lost.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed the average help at the help desk too... man that is terrible, how annoying! They definately need to sort their shit out. It's fairly hard when you don't have the net or a computer at home and they close the hub the occasional weeken. I suppose it can't be open ALL the time but still, its a hard knock life
ReplyDeleteI've come straight from Uni and I have to say that the technical infrastructure here is APALLING. It reflects so badly on the institute as a whole, and really makes something that should be simple to use into a mickey-mouse amateur production. I can't beleive that Wintec is content to continue with such a shoddy system in place, if I had known in advance how poor the computer system is then very probably I wouldn't have enrolled. Wintec should make it clear that students will need to have their own computers at home, because they clearly lack the ability to provide us with the technological support we need to complete our courses.
ReplyDeleteThe issue is actually worth looking into: why on earth did they even consider wiping out students' home drives? Apparently it was an IT matter, they deleted students' home drives. They probably chose to flick through some random names and say to themselves "oh we don't like this person, we'll just delete their stuff". Unacceptable! And, don't even start on the student no-help desktards! The only other way to get attention for these glitches is to write a letter straight to the big man... it does actually work!!!
